Bruderholzkapelle
Now used by the Boy Scouts, this building used to be a Protestant chapel where Karl Barth delivered two sermons in 1956 and 1957. After becoming acquainted with the congregation of a prison in Basel he decided to use all his preaching energy for that community (see St. Peter’s Church). From 1954 to 1964, he preached 28 times in the Schällemätteli Prison, averaging twice or three times a year. He once said, «Everything was somehow more real there than in other churches with their congregations of ordinary Christianity.» In prior years, Barth had also preached in the Münster Cathedral or in St. Jakob’s Church in Basel.
